Original Design Manufacturing

ODM Electronics: Designed and Manufactured for Your Brand

Original design manufacturing (ODM) means we take responsibility for both the design and the production of your electronic product. You bring a requirement, a target price and a market. We deliver a finished, tested, manufacturable product ready to sell under your name.

Asad Enterprises has engineered and built electronics in Pune, India since 2004. Our ODM service brings our PCB design, embedded firmware, mechanical integration and manufacturing teams together on a single project plan, so the product you approve in the lab is the same product that comes off the line.

How ODM differs from EMS

In an EMS engagement, you own the design and we manufacture it to your documentation. In an ODM engagement, we create the design as well. That makes ODM the faster route for companies that have market access, sales channels or domain knowledge but no in-house hardware team.

ODM also removes the hand-off risk between a design consultancy and a separate manufacturer. Design decisions are made with our production capabilities, component supply and test strategy in mind from day one. Read our full comparison on the EMS vs ODM page.

From specification to production-ready design

Every ODM project begins with a structured requirements phase. We document functions, interfaces, power budgets, environmental conditions, certifications, enclosure constraints and target cost. This specification becomes the reference for design reviews and acceptance testing.

Our engineers then develop schematics, select components with long lifecycles and multiple sources, lay out the PCB, write firmware and integrate everything into an enclosure. Engineering samples are built and tested against the specification, and feedback is folded into a design freeze before pilot production.

Products we design and manufacture

Typical ODM projects include industrial controllers and panel meters, data loggers, sensor modules with integrated displays, power supplies and chargers, monitoring devices for medical and laboratory use, vehicle electronics, smart home devices and IoT gateways.

Many ODM products also become white label programmes, where the same proven design is sold by several brands with different branding, firmware features or enclosures. See White Label Electronics for how that works.

Ownership, confidentiality and commercial terms

Intellectual property ownership is agreed in writing before design starts. Depending on the commercial model, a design can be owned outright by you, licensed exclusively to you for a market, or retained by us and supplied to you as a product. We explain each option clearly so you can choose the right balance of upfront cost and control.

All ODM work is covered by NDA, and your product roadmap, pricing and customer information remain confidential.

What a good product specification includes

A clear specification prevents costly changes later. It should describe what the product must do, who will use it and where, how it will be powered, what it connects to, the environmental conditions it must survive, the certifications it needs, the target cost at your expected volume and the size and appearance of the enclosure.

If you do not have a specification, our discovery workshops help you build one. We ask structured questions, suggest options and document decisions so that everyone agrees on what is being built before engineering starts.

Managing cost from the first design review

Around three quarters of a product's manufacturing cost is decided during design. Our engineers track the estimated bill of materials cost at every review, compare alternatives and flag decisions that would push the product over its target.

We also design for the volumes you expect. A product sold in hundreds per year may use a standard enclosure and modular components, while a product sold in tens of thousands justifies custom tooling and more integrated electronics.

Design reviews and sign-off

ODM projects progress through defined gates: concept, schematic, layout, prototype and pre-production. At each gate you review the work and approve the next step. This keeps you in control of the product without needing to manage the engineering yourself.

Design documentation is maintained throughout, so you always have an up-to-date record of the product.

After launch

Products evolve. After launch we support firmware updates, component changes driven by obsolescence and new variants for additional markets or customers. Because we designed and build the product, these changes can be made quickly and validated against the original test procedures.

We also monitor component lifecycles for products we build. When a part is nearing end of life, we inform you early and propose a replacement or last-time buy, so production continues without disruption and your customers never see a supply gap.

Who uses ODM services

Distributors expanding into own-brand products, industrial companies adding electronics to mechanical products, start-ups without hardware teams, and established brands entering new categories all use ODM to reach market faster.

What these customers share is a clear market opportunity and a need to move faster than building an internal hardware team would allow. ODM lets them focus on sales, distribution and customer relationships while we handle engineering and production behind the scenes.

Getting started

Tell us about your product idea, market and target price. We will arrange a discovery call, sign an NDA and propose a project plan with milestones and costs.

The discovery call usually takes less than an hour. Afterwards we send a summary of what we understood, open questions and a proposed next step, which may be a paid specification phase or a full design quotation depending on how defined the product already is.

Typical ODM timeline

A typical ODM project includes a discovery phase, specification sign-off, schematic and layout design, one to three prototype rounds, a pilot build and transition to production. Simple products can move quickly; products with certifications or custom enclosures take longer.

Component lead times, certification lab schedules and the number of prototype rounds are the main factors that move a timeline. We identify long-lead items and certification needs at the specification stage so they can be planned in parallel rather than discovered late.

Reducing risk in ODM projects

We reduce risk by building on proven circuit blocks, selecting components with good availability and testing early on real hardware. Regular reviews mean problems are found when they are cheap to fix.

We also share risks openly. If a requirement is technically difficult or likely to push cost above target, we raise it at the review where it appears and suggest alternatives, so you can make informed trade-offs instead of facing surprises at the end.

Variants and product families

A well-planned ODM design can support several variants from a common platform, such as different sensor types, displays or communication options, reducing development cost for future products.

Planning a platform upfront costs slightly more in the first project but pays back quickly when you add a second or third product. Shared hardware, firmware and test fixtures reduce engineering effort, inventory complexity and time to market for every new variant.
